Staff from a Devon law firm strode out for charity today

Wollen Michelmore workers took to the streets for sponsored walks in aid of World Kidney Day which aims to raise awareness of kidney disease and how to avoid it.

The idea came from Liz Hart, wife of Wollen Michelmore chief executive Chris. The subject was particularly poignant for them – Liz donated a kidney to Chris in a life-saving transplant operation just before Christmas.

The couple kept staff aware of how they were getting on after their operations with regular updates and the kidney was named Sidney!

The Harts are recovering well and are now both back at work.

They have only recently publicly told their story and took the decision to encourage more people to go on the Organ Donation Register and, more importantly, let their family or next of kin know exactly about their organ donation wishes.

Dozens of staff from Wollen Michelmore’s offices in Torquay, Exeter, Barnstaple, Newton Abbot and Dartmouth took part in the two-mile walks at lunchtime today. They all donated to Kidney Research UK.

Wollen Michelmore partner Chris Linton has also set up a Just Giving page so donations can be made on line. Almost £500 has been raised already.

Liz and Chris said after the walks: “We’ve been blown away by the amount of support for the walks after Liz first raised the idea.  We’ve had nearly 100 people from Wollen Michelmore across five towns walking in their lunch break and a huge amount of good wishes from others in the community and from Kidney Research.  Thanks to everyone for their support and donations and to all of our colleagues for their help. We hope they enjoyed the exercise.”
