MESOTHELIOMA AWARENESS DAY - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS DEADLY DISEASE

WHAT IS MESOTHELIOMA?

In the UK about 2500 people a year are diagnosed with mesothelioma. (mesothelioma.uk, 2018). Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the mesothelium, a thin membrane that lines the inner surface of:

-        The chest wall (pleura mesothelioma)

-        The abdomen (peritoneum mesothelioma)

-        The heart (pericardium mesothelioma)

-        The testicles

The mesothelium also surrounds organs within these cavities for example the heart, lungs and intestines, however the chest is the most commonly affected area (Mesothelioma.uk 2018).

CAUSES OF MESOTHELIOMA

Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma. The exposure may have occurred decades before it is diagnosed. Asbestos is a mineral which was mainly used as insulation for heat and electricity for homes. It is made out of dust and fibres and when these are inhaled they  cause many types of asbestos related diseases, including mesothelioma.

There three main types of asbestos, the most commonly used asbestos types are; blue, brown, and white. The blue and brown are recognised as the most harmful and have not been imported in the UK since 1985 (Mesothelioma UK, 2018). Despite the ban against using asbestos, it is still present in buildings and equipment produced before the ban, making asbestos exposure still common today.

HOW IS MESOTHELIOMA DIAGNOSED?

It can take many years after being exposed to asbestos to be diagnosed with mesothelioma or any other asbestos related disease. Many of the symptoms listed above can be very vague at first, and can take many hospital trips and investigations to uncover diagnosis of the disease.

The latency period, which is the length between exposure and diagnosis, can be anywhere between 10 – 50 years.

CAN I CLAIM COMPENSATION FOR MESOTHELIOMA?

If your asbestos related condition was caused by exposure to asbestos at work, you may be able to claim compensation. This includes people who have worked in the armed forces and were exposed to asbestos since 1987.

For a mesothelioma claim to be successful, you will be required to provide evidence about your exposure to asbestos. Claims must be made within three years of your diagnosis.
